Awakening to Your True Essence
What if you were originally enlightened, and that state simply got covered over? Does that sound preposterous? But what if it were true? Can you just imagine it for a moment— what would it be like if enlightenment were not some distant, unreachable goal, but your natural state that you have pushed out of your experience? Have you also learnt to look for happiness outside of yourself – maybe the next toy will do it, or another relationship?
How about bliss? Ecstasy? Enlightenment? Does that seem like asking too much? After all, you most likely don’t know anybody personally who is enlightened, or who has become a saint, no matter how long or how far they searched. But what if enlightenment isn’t something to learn, discover, or achieve? What if it’s as simple as the air we breathe but can’t see?
But how does enlightenment come about? How to achieve it? Can enlightenment be found anywhere outside yourself? Maybe in a temple, an energy point, or a sacred mountain? Millions go to holy places—but do they find enlightenment there? These sacred paths and locations can help in various ways. For some, it is that they follow instructions they were given, like having to visit Mecca once in their lifetime. For others, they hope to be able to repent by walking along a pilgrimage path. For some, it may help them wear down resistance to looking inward if they are still thinking they have to please some God outside of them. Where are you at? What is it like for you?
What is enlightenment? What are some signs that you are coming into enlightenment?
Signs of spiritual progression into enlightenment may include:
- A deep, pervasive sense of inner peace, regardless of external circumstances.
- A detachment from material desires or societal expectations, leading to more authentic joy.
- Heightened awareness and clarity, where you see reality as it is, without distortion.
- A feeling of interconnectedness with all of life, experiencing compassion without judgment.
- The quieting of mental chatter, replaced by a profound inner stillness.
- A natural inclination towards love, gratitude, and acceptance.
- Experiencing moments of bliss and ecstasy that arise from within, without any specific external trigger.
And all of this has one common denominator, it’s you. You are the experiencer. The world may appear around you, but it’s experienced within. Our senses are like radios that receive signals, which are then translated by the brain—the experience is fully within us and limited by the sensitivity of our senses. Since it’s our brain that translates these impulses, the experience is internal and not necessarily an accurate reflection of reality. And if you experience it within, doesn’t that mean it is also who you are? A reflection of your beliefs, your programming, your experiences, your true core?
The essence of life, the divine, is always there. Underneath all the distorting beliefs and interpretations of events in our lives. All you need to do is turn inward, allow a gap between your thoughts and memories and the one who can observe it all, and you’ll discover you’re already complete. Think of a baby and their contagious laughter—pure, unfiltered joy. That’s who you are too. Yet, as we grow, we lose touch with these gifts. Innocence is replaced by intellect. Silence gives way to the relentless chatter of the mind. The heart is overshadowed by a busy, restless mind. But when you allow yourself to just be and observe without giving any meaning, you’re many steps closer to coming in touch with that current that sustains your life.
Remembering enlightenment isn’t about gaining something new. It’s about a journey back—from the head to the heart, from words to silence, from complexity to simplicity.
Exploring the Nature of Enlightenment
Have you been tempted to set yourself a new goal, that of enlightenment? But do you at the same time believe it’s extremely difficult to attain? But what if enlightenment is not something to pursue or chase after? The very act of seeking it can create a divide and reaffirm your seeming imperfections, your being separate from all, your belief that you have much to learn and are simply not good enough, not worthy. Making enlightenment your goal can create a sense of separation where you believe that you are here, lacking, and enlightenment is somewhere out there, waiting to be attained. Enlightenment is not an external destination; it is a realization—a state of being where you experience reality beyond the confines of your conditioned mind. It’s an awakening to the understanding that you are life itself, that you can experience the totality of it within yourself, and you’re not just a bundle of thoughts and emotions and an accumulation of food turned into a body.
As you allow yourself to remember enlightenment, it’s crucial to go beyond the habitual patterns and compulsions of your mind. Our thoughts, beliefs, and fears create a web that keeps us entangled in repetitive cycles that can span many lifetimes! Enlightenment is like clearing away the dust that clouds the window of your perception—it’s about finding clarity and seeing things as they are, not through the distorted lens of conditioning, but sitting in the truth of all that there is, in the moving stillness of source.
- What would it take for you to let go of the thought that you are separate from life?
- What would it take for your to admit you’re scared of becoming enlightened and what the process may involve?
The nature of enlightenment is deeply tied to presence. When you are fully in touch with the present moment—not caught up in the past or anxious about the future—you come into a state of vibrant stillness. You feel an energy throbbing all throughout your body, you sense it in everything around you, and since everything is permeated by this impulse, it’s all that energy, You may find items disappear from your inner and outer vision and what you see instead are particles dancing with no start nor end to anything, everything is just pulsating, glowing – or disappearing at any given moment. In this state, everything feels alive, and you recognize that you, too, are part of that aliveness. Enlightenment is not about detachment from the world, trying to escape it and only focussing on the void. The divine, the everything is also form and your delight is to be able to profoundly engage with it, without the attachments and fears that typically bind us. Can you embrace both the light and the darkness, knowing that both are integral aspects are one and the same?
Ultimately, enlightenment is not about becoming special or different. It is about becoming absolutely ordinary in the most extraordinary way. It’s realizing that the divine isn’t some distant entity or ideal, but the very life force within you—in every breath, every moment, and every experience. It’s coming to a place where the sense of a separate self dissolves, and what remains is an unbounded connection with everything around you—a state of limitless joy, peace, and oneness.
Beliefs: Barriers to Enlightenment
Have you wondered why this spiritual growth journey to enlightenment is taking so long and seems to be so difficult? Have you heard someone blame their spouse or children or bad job for them not making more spiritual progress? The journey to enlightenment is not always hindered by people in your life giving you a hard time, even if it’s tempting to think it’s someone else’s mistake. So then what else could it be? Maybe you believe it’s because you haven’t found the right teacher yet? Or you think it’s just because you’ve been too lazy – or the opposite, despite putting in countless hours, you can’t seem to get off the merry-go-round?
You are right, all of the above can be factors that may distract us or seem to postpone our growth. And have you considered that all of them are deeply tied to your belief systems? And this is where the iron gets hot. Where our minds start to race and want to protect us. Our mind senses that it could get criticized for its beliefs and it starts to tell us to run, stop reading, it might also try to distract you just to avoid pain. Yes, it can be uncomfortable to realise that we have contributed to the obstacles we have experienced in our lives. And the good news is, if we can create obstacles, we can also dismantle them!
It’s true that often it’s our own beliefs that create the most significant barriers. Even if it at first looks like someone else’s mistake or a matter of karma, when you take a closer look, you will likely notice that had you had a different set of beliefs, you would have made different choices.
For many a spiritual seeker, spiritual progress seems to be one of the things they desire most. But to have to acknowledge that it also scares us and that we build our own obstacles to avoid such mastery is something we resist just as much. And to truly remember our essence and realise that enlightenment is our natural state, we need to bring all of these belief topics into awareness, examine them, and let them go, dissolve them, replace them with the truth. To reach embodied enlightenment, a plethora of karma that’s caused by our belief systems needs to get cleared or we need to find a way to distance ourselves from it.
Common Beliefs that Block Enlightenment
- Happiness is dependent on my achievements or other people making me happy. When you believe that joy is reliant on external circumstances, it becomes conditional and fleeting. True happiness, like enlightenment, comes from within—it is independent of the ups and downs of life.
- I am a normal human being; bliss is not for me. This belief keeps you small. The idea that bliss or enlightenment is reserved for a select few prevents you from recognizing your own potential.
- We are all born sinners; I haven’t got the right to be happy, joyful, blissful. Such beliefs, often instilled through societal conditioning, create a sense of unworthiness and distance from your divine essence.
- Enlightenment is just a fantasy. The belief that enlightenment is an unattainable myth or illusion can keep you from genuinely exploring it. It’s a form of self-sabotage that prevents any real progress.
- It’s not safe to be enlightened; they will just end up killing me. Fears rooted in past trauma or collective memory can surface, suggesting that spiritual awakening will lead to danger. It takes courage to see these fears and heal the wounds, belief systems and penetrate through societal glass ceilings.
- If I start to speak of spiritual experiences, I’ll get locked up in the loony bin. The fear of judgment or societal rejection often holds people back from embracing their spiritual nature. Remember that many great teachers faced misunderstanding, yet their courage paved the way for others.
- If I become enlightened, I can’t have fun anymore and I always have to be perfect. This belief suggests that enlightenment is a joyless state, requiring you to suppress your spontaneity and humanity. In truth, enlightenment is about embodying your full essence—joy, spontaneity, and all. It means letting go of the idea that you need to be anything other than yourself.
- If I become enlightened, I will lose all of my friends and everyone will be scared of me. This belief can stem from the fear of change and the unknown. Enlightenment doesn’t mean disconnecting from the people you love—it means being more deeply connected, but without the dependency or judgment. True enlightenment often enhances your capacity for love, compassion, and understanding, allowing you to form more meaningful and authentic relationships.
These beliefs may seem like barriers, but they are also opportunities. Each one is an invitation to reflect, to uncover the truth behind your fears, and to recognize the illusions for what they are—just thoughts. You are not your thoughts, and your true essence is far beyond any limitations your mind tries to impose.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
- Which of these beliefs resonates with you the most?
- What is the origin of this belief? Is it truly yours, or is it something inherited from society, culture, or family?
